AISI 316 | AISI 316L
AISI 316 and AISI 316L are the international designations for the following grades:

1.4401 – X5CrNiMo17-12-2 (AISI 316)

1.4404 – X2CrNiMo17-12-2 (AISI 316L)

1.4435 – X2CrNiMo18-14-3 (AISI 316L)

The AISI 316 and AISI 316L describes stainless, austenitic chromium-nickel-molybdenum steels which have good resistance in non-oxidizing acids and chlorine-containing media. Due to the chemical composition, the material 316 and the material 316L are inherently corrosion resistant metal alloys.

AISI 316L differs from AISI 316 in its lower carbon content. The "L" stands for "low carbon" in this case.

The materials 1.4401 and 1.4404, which belong to the V4A Group, are easy to machine and weld. With the addition of 2-2.5% molybdenum, both grades show good corrosion resistance even in the presence of chlorides. The main areas of application of these AISI standards are found in the construction, chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Both the use in the low temperature range is possible, as well as the application up to 550°C.

Material grade 1.4435, also called 316L stainless steel, is described as a non-magnetic steel. The Delta ferrite content is max. 0.5%. It can be used in accordance with the Pressure Equipment guidelines 97/23 EG. The areas of application of this material are in the petroleum / petrochemical or optical industries, etc.

Uses for SS AISI 316

Also known as surgical stainless steel, marine steel, 316S16 (as per the British Standard), SS 316 is an austenitic chromium-nickel alloy. As a consequence it:

  • Has a very high corrosion resistance
  • Is generally nonmagnetic
  • Can perform well at a very wide temperature range (-150 to 950 °C).

It is also worth noting that SS AISI 316 can withstand extremely corrosive environments and is easily shaped, welded and machined. Using standard fusion methods, it is very popular in a wide range of applications including the following sectors:

  • Medical equipment
  • Aerospace engineering
  • Food processing equipment
  • Storage tanks and transport tanks for chemicals
  • Nuclear plants (cladding of fuel rods)
  • Textile dyeing and/or bleaching machines
  • Rubber and paper pulp production plants
  • Screens for mining plants
  • Quarrying and water filtration systems
  • Springs, bolts, screws and nuts
  • Marine engineering and boat fittings
  • Cryogenics

Additional reasons why AISI 316 is used in the aforementioned sectors include:

  • An aesthetically pleasing appearance
  • Easiness in cleaning
  • Relatively high-strength to weight ratio
  • Relatively high availability in many different forms
