Stainless steel does not stain, corrode, or rust as easily as regular carbon steel and provides high strength and impact resistance along with the aesthetic appeal. The material also has anti-bacterial qualities and is easy to clean and sanitize.
Stainless steel sheet and stainless steel plate are both a perfect solution for applications that require a durable metal with anti-oxidation qualities.

What is SS430?

SUS 430 is a ferritic, straight chromium, non-hardenable grade, combining good corrosion resistance and formability characteristics with useful mechanical properties. Its ability to resist nitric acid attack permits its use in specific chemical applications but automotive trim and appliance components represents its largest fields of application.

SUS 430F is the free-machining version of this grade, available in bar form for use in automatic screw machines. SUS 434 is the molybdenum bearing version of SUS 430 and has the same useful combination of properties. Its molybdenum addition improves corrosion resistance.

Corrosion resistance

Stainless steel as a whole is corrosion-resistant however, different grades perform better than others. The introduction to nickel in 304 makes it a much more corrosion resistant grade than 430 however, it does make it more expensive. Where cost is a larger factor than a life span, 430 may be more suitable.

Pressing / Drawing

In addition to the presence of nickel making 304 more corrosion resistant, it also makes it much easier to press and draw. The absence of nickel in 430 means that this grade of stainless steel will likely crack or fail if compared to pressing 304.

Possible Alternative Grades

Suitable alternative grades that can be chosen instead of grade 430 stainless steelgrades that can be chosen instead of grade 430 stainless steel are listed in the table below.

Table 5 - Possible alternatives to grade 430 stainless steel

Grade

Reasons for choosing 430

430F

Higher machinability than 430 is needed in bar product, and reduced corrosion resistance is acceptable

434

Better pitting resistance is required

304

Slightly higher corrosion resistance is needed, together with greatly improved ability to be welded and cold formed

316

Much better corrosion resistance is needed, coupled with greatly improved ability to be welded and cold formed

3CR12

Lower corrosion resistance is acceptable in a cost-critical application

Fabrication

Stainless steel grade 430 has a low work hardening rate which enables easy bending and forming. The low ductility rate, however, makes it difficult to perform very rigorous operations. It is possible for grade 430 wire to handle rigorous cold heading. Sub-critical intermediate annealing may be required for extreme cold working.

Applications

The following are the applications for stainless steel grade 430:

  • Dish washer linings
  • Refrigerator cabinet panels
  • Element supports and fasteners
  • Stove trim rings and chimney liners
  • Automotive trim and lashing wires

The key application of grade 430F is in repeatedly used machined parts.
